Home Depot, and other such places, have a device called an Earthquake Alarm.

It works by detecting the P-wave and prodicing an alarm. We have one placed on the wall near our stairs inside. It works. At least it confirms that 'Uh Oh' that goes thru your head when you feel a tremor. It will also go off if you fall down the stairs and hit the wall..

Hmm.. maybe it's time to check the battery.
