Breaking rocks...

Happy Sunday everyone:

John mentioned something in a recent post about studying how rocks break. It made me think that some laboratory work must have been done on this very subject and thought of a some questions for any who cares to answer.

1) Have crush or break tests been - or are they regularly performed - on various types of rock?

If so, then:

2) Have there been any measured emmissions of any type of energy while the rock was under stress? Any recorded oscillations of any kind PRIOR to the rock failing?
