Let's hand it to the seismologists here in California for engineering better bridges and buildings, especially schools. We have a long way to go on hospitals, as I understand it. Although Vidale does not believe that quiescence can be used for predictability, the record of seismic events can. Evey tick of the clock brings us closer to a disaster in southern California. But which tick or tock will be the moment of rupture? In this sense, John is absolutely right.

If we don't blow ourselves to smithereens, I give it about 10 to 15 years and we will be able to forcast quakes within 6 months. It will be an integration of data. I think the Japanese will get it first. More quakes to work with. We don't have enough strong quakes to study.
