Re: For Chris--Channel Island Beach Quakes

Hi everyone,
I know that this is meant for Chris and I have the highest respect for him and his work but this is an aside, regarding the Channel Islands. I have been watching these quakes with a touch of uneasiness for a couple of reasons:1) My first visit was the day before the Hector Mines quake and memories of viewing those scarred islands has stuck with me ever since. Weirdly enough for anyone who knows me, the Channel Islands are one of my favorite places in the world - I can't explain it but there is an otherworldly feeling to it; 2)That, combined with experiencing the sight of those jaggedly cutting across the islands and then leaping into the ocean only to reappear on another island drives home the potential damage that a quake out there can bring ashore. The cave on Santa Cruz Island is almost unimaginable; and 3) the islands are something that I would strongly suggest that everyone should see in person (and not just in films) at least once in their lives. Especially anyone with an interest in the geology of the region and/or an interest in seimology. It is memorable and belongs in the "1,000 Places to See..." book if not there already.
Thus, when I see these "little quakes" that seem to be growing and not shrinking as any well-behaved aftershock pattern should do,I become just a tad nervous and certainly more vigilant. Take care everyone and stay safe. I'd still like to hear Chris' take on these quakes, too. Beth
