Re: For Chris--Channel Island Beach Quakes

Chris and Don,
I think that Channel Islands Beach is actually in Ventura/Oxnard Harbor where the Channel Islands National Park offices (on the mainland in Oxnard/Ventura) are located. Also, if memory still holds, there is a fault that runs across Santa Rosa Island from the southern end and across to Santa Cruz that has some seriously scary legends attached to it. I spent some time with rangers and again with some folks who had walked the islands since before they became National Parks and it was casual but I learned quite a lot from those encounters. On Santa Rosa - then anyway - the offset was quite visible. I wish I had my big fault map handy but it's in storage. The fault curved off Santa Rosa to the south and back to the east I think. I can still see it but my directions (inside my head) are a bit rusty but I never ventured to the west side of the island and it was away from the main docks on the northeastern side. The fault split down the hills and plunged into the ocean and I'm sure that it headed off to the southeast because of the angle of the sun and also it was an unsually warm, clear day. None of the online fault maps give any reference to it. Drat!
Anyway, did anyone notice the line of faults running from SW to NE from the islands and up through Coso and into Nevada? Interesting.
While I'm on a roll, awhile back we were talking about that slump off New Orleans - anyone remember? I was down there shortly after for Mardi Gras and I was talking to some petroleum engineers who monitor and work on/around the platforms and they said (off the record) that there's been a big push to get more oil out faster and - this is the part where I'm not totally clear - they've been pumping in something (water perhaps?) and then suck it out under pressure and they thought that it may have a lot to do with the slump. Something like adding water to a shampoo bottle and then sucking it out - they said that the undersea land collapses like the side of a shampoo bottle - or something like that. It was quite noisy but I'm pretty sure that was the gist of it.
Just FYI.
Beth
