Hi All. The 2003 earthquake swarm at the north end of Lake Tahoe caused Slide Mountain to rise by one-third of an inch and move northeastward by two-tenths of an inch. This was caused by more than 1,600 unusually deep quakes during the seven-month swarm, all with magnitudes of 2.2 or less which are too small to be noticed at ground level.

On 05/26/05 there was an M=4.8 earthquake about 10 km north of Lake Tahoe at a depth of 12 km. This event follows an M 4.5 event in June of 2004 and was located north of the lower crustal swarm in 2003. The “moment tensor solution” shows the quake to have been strike-slip.

If the earthquakes and what have you aren’t bad enough for you there is evidence shows that approximately every 3,000 years, the seismic faults underneath Lake Tahoe produce an earthquake with the power to push the ground up or down by 10 feet or more, which could cause an tsunami.

This of course brings me to my favorite topic. The “Walker Lane Belt” and the quakes that have occurred in the zone in the past including the Burney swarm in 2000. No determination has been made as to the cause of the swarm that I’m aware of however it did occur in a weak crustal zone as well as a volcanic zone. Is there a connection there? Could the Burney swarm and the Tahoe swarm all be related to movement within the “Walker Lane Belt”? Take Care…Don in creepy town
