Can have large tsunami but not from that fault

Petra....Bohannon has published recently on a landslide offshore Palos Verdes...and I think they calculated a rather large local tsunami from that underwater landslide. An earthquake on the Palos Verdes fault could trigger a submarine landslide...why not? Ward and Valensise 1994 calculate the vertical motion centered on Palos Verdes Hills from oblique slip into the restraining double bend of the Palos Verdes fault...most of the uplift is onshore and would not cause a tsunami, but some is offshore. But, my/our interpretation of that area is rather different and could cause a much larger and somewhat less local tsunami...although I don't mention this or calculate any of this in my/our Nov 2005 SCEC annual report. As I've posted before, we think that the tip of the regional lower Elysian Park-Compton thrust system is located beneath the offshore base of the submarine San Pedro escarpment. A M7 or a little larger thrust earthquake on this would cause uplift of a large area that is offshore...so could cause a tsunami...being close like Long Beach/LA harbor is a bad thing, not a good thing...there would not be much time between an earthquake and the time of arrival of the tsunami. I think that large thrust earthquakes on this system would be rare...but I guess I'm guessing now so time to stop writing.

I think I'll stay semi-anonymous on this one because it is better that we get a paper published on this first...But I was very direct in the SCEC report because I think a lot of big shots have it really wrong, including the USGS-NEHRP panel...
