Glen,

Ear tones don't last that long. Usually from 1/4 second to 45 or something along those lines. But I do know of one man who had a tone for a long time, like an hour before a major earthquake on the other side of the Pacific. The instant it occurred, the tone stopped. But that is really unusual.

The way I describe ear tones is to imagine a piece of fibre optic wire going from the epicenter of the earthquake to you. When you hear the sound it is as though you're hearing it traveling back to that place. Depending on the type of rock structure it affects the frequency of the sound. Granite emits very high pitches and very electrical type of noise, the SAF is deeper and more earthy and San Diego and that general vicinity emits a high pitched sound too. Big earthquakes make a really loud sound and the sound also seems wide. Think of your fibre optic wire that has a huge amount of electrical current traveling down it. It would resemble a sparkler rather than a tiny wire.

Do you remember when they discovered that lightning strikes actually come up from the ground rather than the lightning going straight into the ground? Tones may be like that, they come to you and you hear this vibration and it seems like a sound, but it really isn't a sound in the traditional sense. It just arrives at a frequency that isn't the same as sounds you hear in the place where you are located. Oh, the turning thing doesn't mean anything. I covered that early on. You are not a radio antenna. LOL
