Ahhh - this reminds me of another favorite book: Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle - one of the firt written about an asteroid strike and it's consequences.. The central valley filled up in this one - it's about people surviving the hit... excellent book. I probably should go pull from by storage boxes and re-read it...
