Which affects earthquake insurance costs more - a home's location in relation to a fault or faults, or the type of soil where the house is built? My current earthquake policy costs less than one on our former home 3 miles away. This house is newer and slightly smaller, but I think older nearby homes have similar rates. This house is
at least 2 miles nearer the location of previous local 5+ earthquakes but the soil here is different - the former home was near gravel pits.
