I use bungee cords to secure the T.V.s and computers in our home. Just make sure they are anchored to a stud. (Marco doesn't count.) They are less obvious than the straps sold in stores.

When I designed our house, I had all the bookshelves, etc., built in and had it WAY over-engineered. The building inspector said he had never seen more hold downs in a single foundation. Still, the prospect of a huge earthquake worries me. I guess all you can do is be prepared (or move).
