the organic Miocene shales such as the Monterey Formation will burn...and will burn at 100s of m depth underground. It would be interesting to plot this hot spot on a geologic map. It sounds like the rock is on fire. I've seen Monterey Formation in a number of location baked like pottery. I know Boles....maybe I'll ask him....
