Faults are like onions

"To be truthful I’m not even sure it’s a fault. If it is a fault it’s the darndest thing I have ever seen."

Don,

You have been reading my mind! It is not necessay that an EQ occur on a fault. When an EQ occurs, if there is no fault, the EQ *creates* the fault. Of course in Japan there are so many faults it is hard to imagine an EQ having the opportunity to create another one. However, the ideas of "fault" and "plate boundary" are worlds apart. For a concrete example, lately there have been a number of quakes near to us -- it's hard to say to what fault they each belong; that depends on circumstances and timing.

By the way, raw onions and garlic not only keep mosquitoes away, in my experience, but sometimes one's whole family disappears for a while. Some people are sensitive to earthquakes, and some are sensitive to onions. That is just the way it is.
