This is a strike-slip earthquake, and is about as large as strike-slip earthquakes get (it is rated 8.1 on the NEIC page, but it does not say whether it is moment magnitude...8 and above are "Great" earthquakes). It is located about 200 km west of the plate boundary...the plate boundary is right-lateral strike-slip....and had a M8+ quake a decade (??) ago. This one is odd...as neither possible fault plane is close to parallel with the plate boundary....
