M4.4 west of UCSB |
I was away for the weekemd, and come back to a 4.4 about 10 km west of UCSB, in northern Santa Barbara Channel. I'm pretty sure this is the largest quake in the Channel since before I arrived at UCSB in 1988. It may be the largest quake since the damaging M 5++ quake in 1978...which knocked over a lot of the bookshelves at the library....which are ties together now..... Got a couple of emails from co-worked who felt this one....I'm about 4000 km away, so, no worries... One of the 3 papers that I am working on now is on the fault sytem in northern Santa Barbara Channel.....I am not the lead person on this. The fault sytem in Northern Santa Barbara Channel is capable of much bigger quakes than a 4.4........probably at least a 7 is possible.....
