M4.5 in Turkey-N.A.F. |
There was a M4.5 in the SW part of Marmara Sea, Turkey, the other day. If precisely-located, this is south of the main active branch of the North Anatolia fault. There is (a) southern branch(es) that this could be related to. The more slip there is on the southern branch, the less that is available for the northern branch....the northern branch is much closer to Istanbul. Rangin et al just published a paper where they, like me, say that there is not much stretching in Marmara Sea, and you can do this by having a fair amount of slip on the southern branch....
