40 years ago, on March 27th, 1964, at 5:36 p.m. local time - the largest recorded earthquake to hit North America struck in Alaska. One hundred fourteen Alaskans died as a result of the earthquake and the tsunamis that followed, as did 16 people in Oregon and California.
