Re: those foreshocks too small for alarm

Back after the SCEC meeting, where I met John V and looked at his tidal triggering poster-whose first author is a grad student who I know from work here (she was a student here).
Couple of things:
Some of the swarms in southern California may involve fluids (Brawley zone) and fluids and volcanic activity (Coso, Long Valley).

There was a talk at the SCEC meeting by Agnes Helmstetter saying that 100 M6 EQs have more effect on triggering larger quakes than does a M8-so small earthquakes MORE important than large earthquakes for triggering. John-jump in here-was she calculating static stress?

Jeanne Hardebeck gave a talk on whether the San Andreas was a stgrong or weak fault. She was able to rule out the San Andreas being an order of magnitude weaker than other faults-so either all faults are stong or all faults are weak...This is an oversimplification of what she said-I have to get some work done today....There was a poster about accelerating moment release-with some fairly specific predictions (or are they forecasts?) for certain faults-southern Elsinore was one....Chris
