Re: Destructive earthquake in Turkey |
Just saw coverage of the Turkey earthquake on ABC national news and French channel 2 news. My friend and coauthor Nano Seeber was on ANC news, but for about 10 seconds. He said that it would not be hard to make buildings that did not fall down so easily (but not in those words). The abbreviated coverage before made it appear that the quake was on the North Anatolian fault, which it was not. The French news did better because they spent more time, but they did not make clear that it was on the East Anatolian fault. I saw a talk the other week that earthquakes along the Dead Sea system tend to occur during the same centuries that the East Anatolian fault is active, and not when the North Anatolian fault is active. So, if it occurs on a shorter scale and has a physical cause, watch out Israel, Jordan, Lebanon.....might be interesting if there are 4s or 5s in the next week......(not a predication because it has little basis.....Chris Follow Ups: ● complicated faulting - John Vidale 18:05:56 - 5/1/2003 (18562) (0) ● Re: Destructive earthquake in Turkey - Canie 16:21:49 - 5/1/2003 (18561) (1) ● Re: Destructive earthquake in Turkey - chris in suburbia 18:33:13 - 5/1/2003 (18565) (0) |
