Hi Guys - Shan's method (as I understand it) is a low-tech tilt detection system. It basically determines if there's been any movement of the land relative to some given markings on a wall and the sun.

Scientists today use any number of instruments to measure these same things. (GPS, Tilt meters, lasers, etc)

Granted, making a few marks on a wall across a year's time frame and marking the sun's position is much cheaper but also much less accurate than using instruments to measure such changes.

You can't always tell that a quake is imminent given changes in tilt, or because of ground movement. It might be a good place to look if one was sure that a quake was imminent by some other factor.
