Hi Petra. The person sounds like he may have gotten a taste of reality. It seems reasonable that they should have been able to put some of the theories to the test by now. I don’t know that they have, but if they have put them to the test and were met with failure after failure you begin to wonder as to who is right. Those who say predicting some earthquakes can be done, or those who say it can’t. It may also be that the support needed to conduct the research isn’t there either in the form of money, or personnel. Not many Governments are going to send money to an organization outside their country for the purpose of earthquake prediction research. Too many times in the past they have seen individuals, or groups make such claims only to learn that the claims made were overstated. In many ways this is sad because it not only hurts those who indeed may be onto something, but it also hurts those in the future. The people of Kobe, Japan learned a bitter lesson from their quake. They learned that their Government couldn’t predict a major quake. They also learned that the Government was not set up to take care of them after the quake. All of this stemmed from no one believing a quake of that magnitude could, or would occur there. Without failures there can be no success. A baby isn’t born with the ability to walk. They learn from trying. Many times they will fall, but they get up and try again. They keep trying until they get it right.
