Hi Folks,
Just a few notes on earthquakes in southern Indiana. The following earthquake of Mb>=5
have been recorded in the general vicinity of today's earthquake:

MO DA HR MN SC YEAR N LAT W LONG DEP ML

6 9 14 45 0 1838 38.500 -89.000 0 5.7
10 8 10 0 0 1857 38.700 -89.200 0 5.3
9 27 4 55 0 1891 38.250 -88.500 0 5.8
9 27 9 45 0 1909 39.000 -87.700 0 5.7
11 9 17 1 41 1968 38.000 -88.500 19 5.3

This was the strongest earthquake in the region since 1895. It caused minor damage in the nearlest metropolitan centers - Evansville, 50 miles east; Chicago, over 270 miles north and St. Louis about 110 miles to the northwest. Considerable masonry damage was sustanied at the City Building in Henderson , Ky. 50 miles SSE of the epicenter. There were islolated felt reports from people in tall buildings from Boston to southern Ontario. In the epicentral area earthquake damage was primarily to brick sructures - chimneys, windows and toppled
television sets in addition to plaster cracking. Intensity VII as characterized by downed chimneys foundation cracks, and scattered collapsed parapets and overturned tombstones. All chimney damage appeared to be in chimneys built over 30 to 50 years before.

6 10 23 48 55 1987 38.713 -87.954 10 5.1

Earthquakes in this area tend to be felt over large areas. For example, On April 3, 1974 a Ml 4.5 occurred nearby and was felt over
approximately 632,000 sq. km. in parts of Arkansas, Illinois,Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Misouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia
and Wisconsin. Minor damage usually results including downed chimneys, crack plaster and concrete floors. It is also interesting
to note the the April 3, 1974 earthquake occurred about an hour after tornados passed through the area. It is believed that many of the effects from the two - the tornados and the earthquake were confused in the literature.

Finally a verification of the distance of this event to the Chile earthquake of 70.5 degrees puts it in the middle of a FFA distance - 70 to 73 degrees. Ground motion from the Chile event may well have helped to precipitate this Indiana earthquake.
