Re Insturment Package Costs

Hi 2 cents. To install the needed instruments to cover the Rodgers Creek fault it would cost around $200,000.00 for two holes one on each side of the fault. Both holes have to be in unfractured bedrock.

The instruments are creep, tensor strain, dilational strain and tilt. They would also need a transmitter to transmit the information to a satellite, which in turn would transmit the data to a receiver maintained by USGS.

What makes the cost so high is the hole itself. They are required to trap all of the water that comes to the surface. If they were drilling for water they wouldn’t be required to do this. Yea I know it doesn’t make any sense, but that’s what they have to do.

They were able to install a complete package on the San Andreas fault, but not sure as to the exact location.

They are in the process of installing a package in the area of the Marin Headlands, but had a delay due to a cave-in of the hole they drilled. Take Care…Don in creepy town
