If you're talking about government scientists, clothes don't matter. We had to take sexual harassment classes that left most of us afraid to say "hello" to a woman.

The real problem is that you're not "in the club", especially if you're talking to PhDs.

The other part is that it's very hard to talk to a layman because we don't know how much of the jargon you will understand.

I don't have any problem because I don't know that much myself!
