What If? |
Hi All, I've had this thought roaming around upstairs in the little gray cells today and I thought for the sake of some good discussion I'd share it with you and we could discuss "what if." Don and I have been tossing around this hypothesis that the area on/or around the SAF, South of Parkfield, but North of Ft. Tejon may be the area of the next big one in CA. The good news is that this area is not densely populated. So, what if a 7.9 or 8.0 quake arrives in this area, do you feel that it might trigger other faults either East or South of this area to break? In my "what if" scenario I would think that there could easily be a series of 4.0 and 5.0 quakes all around the area. The reason I say this is because of the lack of these moderate sized quakes of late. But if the quake arrives on the SAF, is it possible that other segments of the same fault will also break, even if not in the immediate vicinity? I am most curious to know how some of you may view this possible future event.
