Hi Bob,

The Earthquake Trail is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore and is about 1/4 mile from downtown Olema. I've been there about six times and it has some "real feel" to it.

At the part of the trail in which a fence moved 12 feet from its original position, there are two old Madrone trees. One of them grows half down and half up. This is due to the 1906 earthquake. But standing under the other one, which is totally upright provides an absolutely ominous feel to it.

I highly recommend a visit by anyone of any age. The trail is not very long, but has a lot of informative posters as one travels along and its a great learning tool. The Bear Valley Station has a natural habitat museum which lets you view all of the animals that live in the area. There's a good geology book store along with other memorabilia for sale. Including EQ maps.

My favorite time to visit is during the summer when the little moles that live in the area pop their little heads up and down all the time. They are so cute and they have little black shiny eyes. They have a colony of which I'm sure is in the hundreds.

But as I told Don a few days ago I heard something new and that is the area where I think it is eminating from. What I heard was similar to an ear tone, but I heard this sound about five times in one day. The first two times I heard it I really didn't know what to make of it, but decided if I heard it again, then I was going to listen very intently. So I got three more tries. All in all, I concluded the sound was very close to me and most likely from the SAF at Olema and what the sound seems to be is aseismic slip. A series of slow earthquakes in progress.

The primary reason I say that is because this sound was absent of the usual singular tone that comes with most ear tones. So as we can see, there is more to be heard in nature than just plain old ear tones, hearing the Earth moving on her own, slowly, is another to add to the list of oddities in nature.
