Proposed Programming Effort – January 10, 2013

These days there probably aren’t too many people who are interested in running bulletin boards using the WWWBoard program. However, the EarthWaves board is based on that program as is my new bulletin board. And there are a few other older boards out there that use that program. So, the following is being proposed:

Amateur and professional programmers who are interested in developing modification for that bulletin board program and applications that would work with it such as picture file creation programs might want to discuss the subject matter on the EarthWaves bulletin board.

The first version of the new board that I myself am creating will be exclusively for earthquake related research and forecasting. But it will also be intended to serve as a type of “template” for the creation of similar bulletin boards that can be used by other researchers around the world for any area of science etc. One could even be a bulletin board that was used exclusively for WWWBoard program development efforts instead of using the EarthWaves board for that.

Some actual experienced Perl programmers might become interested in the effort. And if nothing else, they could make adjustments to any new program code so that they would conform to experienced Perl progammers’ high standards (humor intended). My own programming standards could be summarized as “whatever will run.”

Roger and other programmers who might not like Perl could contribute to the effort by developing code for various routines using their own favorite languages. Once running, those programs could then be translated into Perl for use with the WWWBoard program. Roger and I have already done that with a number of program routines that are being used with my Etdprog.exe earthquake forecasting Perl language program.

HTTM Web page code could also be developed independently of other types of program code. Anyone can easily do that using a HTML editor such as SeaMonkey.

I am fairly certain that I know where I can find a number of programmers who might be interested in this type of effort. However, I don’t want to actually get it formally started until my new bulletin board is fully operational.

That new bulletin board is now mostly in the “fine tuning” stage out of the three stages, course, medium, and fine. Adjustments are being made to the layout and appearance of the main board Web page and other data entry screen Web pages.

The Perl language development effort for that WWWBoard program was so difficult that I gradually created a number of code checking routines for use with Xampp that automatically get everything running again after some program code error causes the Perl language CGI board program to crash. That makes adding modifications to the program and HTML Web pages much, much easier and faster.
