A Thought Running Through My Head |
Hi All. A thought has been running through my head for a couple of days now and I thought maybe if I tossed it out for someone else to think on maybe, just maybe an answer can be found. This is strictly hypothetical, as I have never seen a map showing the Great Valley fault going much beyond Coalinga. It does end south of Coalinga, but just does. The thing that has me thinking are the two quakes south of Coalinga. One near Taft and one near Simmler. Now it’s true that the quake near Taft could be associated with the San Andreas fault, but not necessarily the one near Simmler. Now here is what I’m thinking. Could it be that the Great Valley fault runs all the way down to the junction where the Garlock and the San Andreas fault meet? The Great Valley fault is a thrust fault so I’m not sure if a thrust fault could form so close to a right lateral strike slip fault. I’ll leave that for someone else to answer. I’m not really sure why this should concern me, but it does.
