Lo'ihi Seamount, Hawaii and Hollywood earthquakes - activated by solar flares?

The largest earthquakes in the U.S. since the last report were a Ml 4.2 near West Hollywood, California and a Ml 4.3 at Lo'ihi Seamount south of Hawaii. The Hollywood quake occurred at 16:59 PDT on 9 September. The strongest flare (M9.5) since August 24 had occurred earlier in the day at about 12:40 PST while Hollywood was sub-solar. The next strongest solar flare (M2.3) occurred this afternoon at at 15:40 HST (Hawaii Standard Time) while Lo'ihi Seamount south of the Island of Hawaii was basking in the afternoon sun. 14 minutes later at 15:54 HST a moderate Ml 4.3 earthquake reactivated the sesimcity at Lo'ihi. This was followed by a Ml 3.5 at 16:01 HST. Both areas had been expected to see far-field triggering from the Pacific Antarctic Ridge earthquake of 2 September. Lo'ihi lies approximately 74 degrees from the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge event of 2 September, a location where far-field aftershocks were expected: "71-73 degrees: Hawaii" The is a re-activation of Lo'ihi Seamount and the largest events in the Lo'ihi area since Dec. 22, 1998 when a Ml 4.7 occurred. A similar sized event (Ml 4.3-4.4) occurred on June 10, 1999. These have been the only events of note in the region since the collapse of the Lo'ihi crater in the summer of 1996 when dozens of such earthquakes accompanied the collapse. The only event in the past two years of Ml>=4 in the region in the past 2 years was a Ml 4.1 on July 21, 2001. This is also the largest event in the region of Hawaii since a Ml 4.5 on August 4, 2001.
