I once had a pretty good description that Kate Hutton had sent me on that phase column in reference to california quakes - They had done a lot of work on it while there were underground bombs going off over in Nevada... Now if I could only find it... But she did say that the first motion on the explosions was all compression or Up and that's how they determine quarry blasts or quakes.
