For those (which includes most of us) who are unfamiliar with the frequency and
size of large solar flares here is some digestible data:
Only 4 flares have reached output greater than today's since
Jan 1, 2000. These occurred on:

April 2, 2001 X20.0
April 6, 2001 X 5.6
April 15, 2001 X14.4

Following is a list of all X-class flares since Jan 1, 2001 (from SEC)

June 6, 2000 X 1.1, X2.3
June 7, 2000 X 1.2
June 18, 2000 X 1.0
July 11, 2000 X 1.0

The last X-class event (on June 23, 2001) was followed later in
the day by the MW 8.4 earthquake in Southern Peru.
