The number is incremented anytime a person looks at the main page or an archived main page (I think i may have removed the counter from an archive or 2)

The counter does check to see if the person viewing the page (by IP address) is the same as the last visitor and DOES NOT increment if there is a match. So someone reloading would not effect the count.
