Mary Jane, This is a bit politically charged, so I think I will not say much except that the possibility of a tsunami should have been noted on the warning systems. I asked Pat Lockridge, head of the tsunami program at DOC's National Geophysical Center to write something for you and here is her response: It used to be the policy of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, located near Honolulu, Hawaii, to note every Pacific Basin earthquake with surface wave or moment magnitude over magnitude 6.5. The parameters of each earthquake were given and a notation was made as to whether a tsunami watch, a tsunami warning, and/or verification of a tsunami were given. You might give the PTWC a few more days, then contact them directly to get their reasons as to why this earthquake was not listed. An email address to use is: itic@ptwc.noaa.gov -- Patricia A.
