Hi Cathryn and Lowell. There is a possibility that the creep is good, but not the strain. You cannot have that amount of creep and strain at the same time. This amount of creep depending on how long it lasts can cause an increase in strain further down the road at which time we may, or may not see it.

You can have the strain first then the quake at which time you will see an increase in creep, but that increase will be short lived. This creep is associated with the southern segment of the Hayward fault and I rather doubt that the 1.8Md on 08/19/01 has anything to do with the acceleration in creep although that can’t be ruled out.
