Two interesting earthquakes occurred in the U.S. today - a swarm near San Clemente Island, CA and a small event in Connecticut (reported today, but actually occurred yesterday). Here is some historical information regarding the seismicity of these two areas: The most unusual event reported in the U.S. today occurred in Connecticut. While this event was only Ml 1.9, it is the largest within 50 km of it's epicenter in the past 14 years. Following are the details of this event (which fittingly enough occurred near HAZARDVILLE, CT). 15AUG2001 14:44:36 41.9N 72.3W MC=1.9 LDGO E of Hazardville, CT Information on earthquakes in the NE United States can be found at: http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/quake.cgi A swarm of events off the coast of Southern California west of San Diego nearly beat out the Andreanoff Island earthquake (MB 4.5) as the largest in the region and was the largest of the UT day. These occurred with Ml 4.4, 4.2, 3.2 and 3.1. In the past 20 years only 3 earthquakes within 50 km of these epicenters have had Ml>4.4. These occurred on June 20, 1997 (Ml 4.7); July 13, 1986 (Ml 5.3); and April 4, 1990 (Ml 4.7). The only prior swarm in the area in the past 100 years similar to today's occurred on June 20, 1997 (Ml 4.4, 4.2, 4.6).
