NEIC AND CERI are reporting a Ml 3.2 earthquake in the Arkadelphia, Arkansas region today. The parameters of this event are: 04AUG2001 1:13:25 34.3N 93.2W ML=3.2 CERI NW of Arkadelphia AR Only 10events within 200 km of the epicenter of Ml>3 in the past 100 years. The last event of Ml>=3 within 150 km of this epicenter occurred on Mar 16, 1997 (Ml 3.4); Dec 25, 1988 (Ml 3.4); Sept. 6, 1985 (Ml 3.8) and Nov. 26, 1977 (Ml 3.1). This appears to be one of several unusual events occurring in the eastern U.S. in the past 10 days - others have been noted on this board including those in Tennessee/No. Carolina, New York/Ontario, New Madrid, and Wichita, Kansas. The occurrence of this event at this time is coincidental with a strong tropical storm (Barry) south of New Orleans. Such storms are often associated with higher than normal seismicity. A study cited to this board several months ago also contends that moderate events in the S.F. Bay area of California tend to occur within 2-3 days after landfall of such storms in the New Orleans area. Might be something to keep in mind as we watch this storm develop.
