I'm not sure if I've seen what you are talking about, but what I have seen when flying from LA to San Francisco is indeed a giant scar in the land that is the San Andreas Fault. It is something else. From what I've read, what I have seen is the exact surface rupture of the 1857 quaek. Anyway, some people have said that is the Carrizo Plain we are seeing from the air.
