Coso Earthquakes (Ml 3.9, 41)
|
Posted by Lowell on July 14, 2001 at 10:56:02:
Two moderate earthquakes occurred in the Coso region of California/Nevada a few minutes ago of Ml 3.9 and 4.1. Earthquakes of this size in this region are commonly followed by swarms of smaller events. There were several mild foreshocks over the past day including a Ml 2.8. Another area showing unusual activity is the region from Coalinga to the Pinnacles. The strain meter at Parkfield started showing strong changes in compressive tensor strain two days ago. This was followed by a Ml 3.2 this morning west of Parkfield and then a Ml 2.8 east of Parkfield later this morning, followed by a Ml 2.8 near the Pinnacles. This might be an area to watch over the next several days. The events lie near the 70-72 degrees distance from the latest Peru (Mw 7.6) aftershock, and may be classified as far-field aftershocks by some.
