A large earthquake occurred about an hour ago in Southern Peru. The current parameters (Quite preliminary) for this event are: 2001/06/23 20:33:16.0 15.9S 73.4W 33G Mb6.4 A NEIA SOUTHERN PERU to 2001/06/23 20:33:11.4 16.8S 74.6W M 6.5 A MAD NEAR COAST OF PERU This earthquake will probably have Mw and Ms>7.0 from initial indications of magnitude on on-line seismograms. It occurred in a area where damage is likely. Perhaps of interest to this board. The earthquake occurred near the location on the earth where the total eclipse of the sun began on 21 June. NASA gives this as: BOLIVIA Cochabamba 17S24' 66W09' but a significant partial eclipse would have been visible in Southern Chile. Our sources will probably provide a far-field aftershock forecast for this event. For eclipse locations see: http://umbra.nascom.nasa.gov/eclipse/010621/tables/table_9.html For further details on the earthquake see: http://cns.igp.gob.pe/net_main.htm or http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/bulletin.html or http://www.emsc-csem.org/cgi-bin/ALERT_all_messages.sh?1 Seismograms are located at: http://aslwww.cr.usgs.gov/Seismic_Data/heli2.htm
