Chris; That's especially true in astronomy, where decent equipment can be had for a reasonable price. Thousands of amateurs can do useful tasks that the professionals just don't have time for. But this is not true for seismology. Useful seismometers are generally out of reach financially and quiet sites are fairly scarce and isolated. The amateur predictors with no concept of probability are just cluttering up the internet and causing needless alarm. IMHO, of course.
