Researchers do Research – November 22, 2012 As stated in the past, one of the most frustrating parts of doing this type of earthquake research has to do with the fact that earthquake researchers will often circulate some highly valuable looking information. Then they just disappear into the cyberspace void and are not heard from again for months. Too often they are just interested in doing research on developing earthquake forecasting methods, not in actually forecasting any earthquakes. Those Web pages at my earthquake research site in part represent attempts to collect enough information regarding various types of earthquake forecasting procedures to enable people to both see that they work and have some idea regarding how to use them. And this is difficult to do when the original researchers appear and then disappear like magic. Shan is something of an exception to that. It has been my experience that he always answers questions. Roger also never disappears for long. And with some humor intended I will propose the following: An urban legend has been circulating for quite a while that the Earth is going to come to an end around December 21, 2012 when the Mayan calendar is supposed to run out of days. If around the middle of December, Roger abruptly stops posting notes to the EarthWaves board then perhaps we should all start thinking about what our positions are likely to be in the afterlife. Merchants, of course, are claiming that there is no truth to that urban legend. It is just another convenient excuse that people are using to postpone their holiday shopping until the last minute! These are personal opinions.
