M6.3 Cascadia strike-slip |
There was a M6.3 strike slip quake last night within the subducting Juan De Fuca plate (or is it a related fragment with another name?). Beth made a comment after the M7.7 thrust quake to the north about whether the Pacific Plate was getting loaded (or something). Well, this quake was within a different plate but is close enough to the 7.7 that it is hard to say they are 100% urelated. How they could be related I don't know: it is pretty far for static stress changes. I'm at a PG&E workshop related to Diablo Canyon. I gave a talk yesterday because I published papers in 1999 on the Hosgri fault and faults to its west. I'm learning a lot. We will see if I remember any of it. For example, Chuck DeMets and others concluded that the coast of central California is moving 3mm/yr with respect to the stable Pacific plate. This was based on GPD data, with a lot of continuous GPS.
