Penny, it is my observation after my short 15+ years on the internet that there is very often a marked difference between scientists and pseudoscientists/quacks/cranks/trolls in how they react to each other.

The quacks typically just shout louder. The more you engage them, the louder they shout. The less you engage them, the louder they shout. They try to take over by simply drowning out everyone else by how loud they shout their ego driven mouth diarrhea. They just can't shut up. The love to hear themselves. They'll even write massive diatribes about how little time they have to explain themselves.

Scientists just move on, since they realize there's no gain to continuing to engage the cranks, unless it's to fill some bored moments with temporary and ultimately unsatisfying moments of humor.
