"The larger quakes tend to have shifted slightly to the northwest with time" Perhaps you miss-typed? Zooming in on the map, http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/ The trend is along SW to NE. Limiting the display to only the top 4 (M4.5+) puts them all on top of each other, although the most recent was significantly shallower.
