Western Turkey has been active in 2 locations the last couple of days: a M4.9 and 5 in each location, with a bunch of 4+s. The M5.0 at 29 deg E longitude is normal slip and is south of the North Anatolian fault system. The earlier M4.9 is near the coast about 50 km west of the 2nd (?) largest city in Turkey, Izmir. A professor and a researcher from Izmir are coming in 11 days to the heartland to work with me and HW. I just sort of committed to go to Izmir for a meeting on Oct1-5. The near-Izmir quake did not have a focal mechanism on the USGS site. Chris
