Update – March 12, 2012

This Earthquake Warning is still active. And new data continue to point to the two locations outside the U.S. for possible seismic activity.

I am also still watching to see if anyone reports anything about the Axial volcano becoming active. I don’t know if they have monitors out there that can send readings to the mainland or if they have to send a boat out to the volcano to check their data recorders. If they need a boat it will probably be a while before anyone knows if it has become active again.

This expected earthquake location information is actually shared with other researchers and appropriate government officials around the world who are asked not to circulate the data freely. I usually don’t post exact details regarding locations in public bulletin boards etc. as these are just probability measurements. And most people wouldn’t appreciate the difference between a 99% risk and a 0.99% risk. They see the word Earthquake somewhere and head out of town.

It is better to let government officials decide what data should be released. That is what they are getting paid for.
