I think the name came from its Linux origin. Those people are fond of goofy names and acronyms. Who would guess that "GIMP" is a graphics editor or that "cat" means to print to the screen?

I think the first such editor I used was called Frogger. It was a dual screen editor so that the html on one screen appeared at once as it would appear online in the other screen. Very handy.

I agree, a good newsgroup is very important.
