Re: M5.6 strike-slip Oklahoma |
same area, another strike-slip quake, this one M5.6, with some damage. CNN says largest quake ever recorded in Oklahoma (previous was 5.5 in 1852). I just checked, the Meers fault, which has a scarp, is far to the southwest. So, what is going on? Historical seismicity map shows this to be an active area, but why? Are the quakes of the last few years in this area related to injection wells? Natural? Is there a larger strike-slip fault that might show up? Might it be covered with young sediment and need seismic reflection (and magnetic and gravity? Or, if there have been larger quakes in the last tens of thousands of years, would it have been evident just from surface features? While looking for Meers fault found the following set of maps on New Madrid: Chris Follow Ups: ● Re: M5.6 strike-slip Oklahoma - Canie 10:31:16 - 11/6/2011 (79347) (1) ● Re: M5.6 strike-slip Oklahoma - Canie 22:37:22 - 11/6/2011 (79348) (1) ● cracks and 5 km depth +/- 2.8 km - heartland chris 04:58:36 - 11/7/2011 (79349) (1) ● quake showed on radar - heartland chris 06:18:49 - 11/8/2011 (79350) (1) ● injection well near epicenter, and study of seismicity and faults link - heartland chris 11:17:58 - 11/8/2011 (79352) (0) |
