Irene is now a hurricane and forecast to become a major hurricane. It is indeed the first hurricane of the Atlantic season. The forecast has it coming ashore in USA somewhere between Florida and North Carolina, with South Carolina in the middle. A couple of decades ago hurricane Hugo came asshore as CAT4 in south Carolina and blew trees down across the state. I was in Rhode Island and it sent big waves up there ahead of it.
