Re: but first...SRTM, GMT

SRTM data are at 90 m for most of the globe. "S" stands for "shuttle", and "R" probably stands for "Radar". How about Topography and Mission for the rest? I think this is 3 arcseconds. For USA, it is 30 m (an arcsecond?). HW and I found the 30 m good stuff for Haiti after their quake. It is online, I would also have to search for it. Your problem will be to decimate this because the files once converted to text will be too huge (may be .grd files that GMT, below, can manipulate).

HW uses a free software, GMT, to manipulate data and make maps. It is available at U Hawaii, and the authors are Wessel and Smith. It is driven by shell scripts. HW has it running on her Mac laptop. It has unix and Windows versions (and probably Linux). GMT drives me nuts and makes me want to say bad words. But, for people who use it all the time, like "HW" and "the Donna", they can do magic with it.

But, it is not 3D interactive (although I think in EOS a decade ago some Germans had made it interactive, and maybe 3D.).

I write a program about every 10 years and I wrote a couple on old BASIC for old MACs (OS 8) that convert standard earthquake catalogue data into 3D shapes, one for each nodal plane of focal mechanisms, with 3D slip vectors, for import into the decidely not free software GOCAD to display in 3D. There is also a set of free software to display the SCEC Community fault model in 3D; it probably displays the 100s of thousands of relocated earthquakes also. Maybe pieces of this will save you time.

It would be a real mess of work to dive into all of this...was nice "talking" to you if you disappear for a while...
